Imagine you are buying an old house. At first glance, it looks charming, but when the renovation begins, you soon discover that the house has been rebuilt for over a hundred years. One room was once a porch. A kitchen has been moved. The electricity has been redone several times. Old water pipes remain behind new walls. A load-bearing wall turns out to be no longer load-bearing, while another wall that no one thought had any function suddenly holds up half the upper floor. The more you tear, the more surprises appear. It’s tempting to think that it would be easier to tear everything down and build a brand new house. But then you realize something important. The foundation is still good. The frame works. The material has a great value. In addition, a new build would require enormous resources and likely create new problems that are not yet visible. So instead the real challenge begins. How do you rebuild a house without destroying what still works?
It is actually exactly the same question that today’s society is facing.
Our social systems are old houses
Healthcare doesn’t look the way it does because someone designed it from scratch. The school system was not designed by a single architect. The tax system has evolved through decades of reforms, compromises and additions. The same applies to transport systems, energy systems, legal systems and basically all large social structures. They are the result of generations of decisions where each reform had a purpose and each new rule solved a problem that was relevant at the time.
As in the old house, every change has been reasonable when implemented. The problem is that very few of these changes have been made with the whole system in mind. They have been created to solve the current challenge and then become part of the structure. After a hundred years of such improvements, the systems begin to resemble old houses where no one really knows anymore why certain walls remain, which wires are still in use or which structures support the whole. This is why change becomes so difficult.
When problem solving becomes patching
Humans are good at solving problems. We see a shortcoming and try to fix it. We see a queue and build more lanes. We see a care queue and introduce a new administrative routine. We see an economic imbalance and add another rule. Every single solution can be wise and well-motivated. But after many decades, the system consists more and more of layers upon layers of solutions, much like an old house where each previous owner did his own renovation without knowing the whole.
In the end, the work is less about creating something new and more about understanding why things look the way they do. This is where systems innovation differs from traditional innovation. System innovation does not begin with the question “What should we build?” but with the question “What have we actually built?” Before we can change a system, we need to understand its history, its dependencies, and why today’s structure looks the way it does.
Why we can’t just start over
Sometimes you hear people say that we should throw out the whole system and start over. That sounds tempting. A blank piece of paper gives a sense of freedom. But reality is rarely that simple.
Take our ecosystems as an example. If invasive species establish themselves in a landscape, we cannot simply replace the ecosystem. A functioning ecosystem is the result of thousands of years of evolution where each species affects other species. When one part changes, the whole balance is affected. The solution is therefore not to create a new ecosystem, but to understand the existing one well enough to be able to restore the balance.
The same logic applies to social systems. We cannot throw away healthcare because it has problems. We cannot tear down the entire transport system because it needs to be realigned. We cannot replace all institutions every time the outside world changes. We have to work with what we already have, and that requires a different kind of creativity than what we are used to.
From creation to re-creation
For most of industrialism, innovation has been about creating new things. New products, new services, new factories and new markets. It was a logical focus. The world grew, markets expanded and globalization made it possible to spread a good solution to millions of people. An innovation could be multiplied. The more people who used the same solution, the greater the effect.
But today the world looks different. We have already built most of it. We already have large transport systems, energy systems, healthcare systems and education systems. The big challenge is therefore no longer to create more systems, but to recreate the systems that already exist. It is a fundamental shift. The innovation of the future is less and less about creation and more and more about re-creation.
The engineer’s new assignment
This also means that the engineering role is changing. For a long time, the engineer’s main task has been to design new solutions. Now the same skills need to be used more and more often to understand, adapt and transform existing structures.
It’s a different kind of problem solving. It is no longer about starting with a blank sheet of paper. It’s about understanding why previous generations built the way they did, which parts still work and which parts need to change. It is more like restoration than new construction, and in many ways it is significantly more difficult. When you build a new building, you control all the conditions yourself. When you rebuild, you have to deal with thousands of decisions that have already been made.
Reuse of structures
In recent years, we have started to talk more and more about the reuse of materials. We reuse bricks, wood, steel and concrete. But the great recycling of the future is likely to be about something even more important. It’s about reusing structures.
We can use existing organizations in new ways. We can use existing infrastructure for new needs. We can use existing laws but interpret them differently. We can use existing buildings instead of demolishing them. We can use the relationships and networks that already exist between people instead of creating completely new organizations. The most sustainable resource is often the one that already exists. This applies as much to social systems as to building materials.
When small changes become big
An old house rarely needs to be demolished to function better. Sometimes it is enough to move a door, open a wall, reinforce a beam or change a window. Suddenly the whole house works in a completely different way.
Systems often work the same. A small change in a regulatory framework can create big changes in people’s behaviour. A changed business model can make new technology possible. A new form of collaboration can change the way several organizations work together. System innovation is therefore rarely about the biggest changes. It is about the changes that affect the most connections at the same time and that cause the whole system to start working differently.
From globalization to global transformation
Globalization was based on the idea that good solutions should spread. When someone invented a better engine, a better mobile phone or a better business system, the same solution could be used all over the world. It created enormous development.
But today almost the whole world has access to similar technology. What now needs to be spread is something completely different. Not new products, but new ways to change what already exists. We need to start multiplying re-creation solutions. How do you rebuild a transport system without stopping traffic? How do you change the industry without destroying the economy? How do you change healthcare without people ending up between the systems? How do you modernize schools without losing everything that actually works?
The export goods of the future may therefore not be products. It may become methods of transformation.
The next development stage of consumption
The same way of thinking also affects our way of consuming. For a long time, consumption has been closely linked to new production. We buy new when our needs change. But a society based on re-creation works differently. We rebuild instead of replacing. We repair instead of discarding. We change function instead of replacing objects.
This does not mean that development stops. On the contrary, it means that creativity is moved from the product to the transformation. The big innovation will not be the next product. The big innovation will be the next way to give existing resources a new life.
Creativity’s next big arena
Perhaps this is the biggest change in the world of innovation. For a hundred years we have been trained to ask: What can we create?
The most important question of the future will instead be: What can we recreate?
That question requires a different kind of creativity. It requires people who can see possibilities in the existing instead of automatically wanting to replace it. It requires systems thinking, patience and respect for history while also requiring courage to change the future. Just as the most skilled architect is not always the one who designs the most spectacular house, but the one who manages to transform an old house into something that works for the next generation.
The future is not built from scratch
We are facing a time where many of humanity’s biggest challenges are not about creating completely new systems, but about carefully changing the systems we already live in. The climate, healthcare, education, energy supply and our cities will not be solved by starting from scratch. They will evolve through thousands of well-thought-out changes that together create something new.
Perhaps this is why the most valuable innovative ability of the future will not be to invent more things, but to understand how the old can become the basis for the new. Just like the old house is never really demolished. It continues to carry history within its walls while each generation makes its own changes. Likewise, the society of the future will not be built on top of an empty field. It will be built by learning the art of re-creation.
