We shape our environments, then they shape us

Imagine two people who spend an hour developing an idea. The first person sits in a conference room where the fluorescent lights hum faintly, the phone is next to them and vibrates occasionally with new notifications, and you can see through the glass door that other people are standing outside and discussing with coffee cups in their hands. The second person sits under a tree on the edge of a park. The phone is turned off. The wind moves slowly through the foliage while their gaze rests on a greenery that is alive but never demands attention.

After an hour, both have thought. But they probably haven’t thought in the same way. This is not primarily due to intelligence, education or motivation. Their surroundings have influenced their brains to work in different ways.

We often imagine that thinking takes place isolated inside the head, as if the brain were a computer that works independently of its surroundings. But research in environmental psychology, neuroscience and cognitive research shows a much more fascinating reality. Our thoughts do not arise solely in the brain. They are formed in a constant interaction between the body, the environment, technology and the people we surround ourselves with. The room we are in, the sounds we hear, the light we see, the nature we encounter and the digital information that constantly seeks our attention become part of the thinking itself. When we change the environment, we therefore also change the conditions for creativity, focus and innovation.

We think with our entire environment

For a long time, working life has been characterized by the notion that the environment is primarily a place where work is done. If the lighting works, the furniture is ergonomic and the technology is in place, the environment is considered good enough. But modern research shows that the environment is not just a background to our work. It functions rather as an invisible operating system that affects how we pay attention, remember, associate and make decisions.

Research on embodied cognition describes how thinking is closely intertwined with the body and the physical environment. We do not think only with our brain. Our movements, sensory impressions and the environment we live in affect how ideas are formed and how problems are understood. This means that creativity is not only about the ability of the individual. It is also a result of the interaction between the person and the environment in which the thoughts are allowed to grow.

From a systems perspective, this becomes even clearer. If the environment affects the thinking of the individual, it also affects the cooperation of groups, the innovative capacity of organizations and, by extension, the development capacity of society as a whole. An environment is therefore never neutral. It reinforces certain behaviors while weakening others.

Nature restores the brain’s ability to think

It is no coincidence that people throughout history have often sought out nature when they needed to think clearly. Many researchers, artists, philosophers and entrepreneurs have described how their most important insights arose during walks rather than in front of a desk. Today, there is also growing research support for this experience.

Environmental psychologists Rachel Kaplan and Stephen Kaplan developed the Attention Restoration Theory, which describes how natural environments help the brain recover the focused attention consumed during an intense workday. Urban environments and digital workflows require constant active decisions about what to prioritize. Nature works differently. It captures our attention softly and effortlessly. The movement of leaves, the slow change of clouds, and the sounds of birds engage the brain without draining its mental resources.

This form of recovery is not a break from creativity. It is often a prerequisite for creativity. When the brain no longer has to defend itself against a constant flow of information, it becomes possible to see connections that were previously hidden. Thoughts have time to connect and ideas can mature instead of being constantly interrupted.

Biophilia is about remembering where we come from

The American biologist Edward O. Wilson described the concept of biophilia as humans’ innate attraction to living systems. For most of our evolution, the human brain evolved in interaction with forests, water, plants and open landscapes. Our senses were shaped by the rhythms of nature long before they were shaped by screens, traffic and digital notifications.

This means that nature is not only beautiful to be in. It also feels intuitively understandable to our nervous system. When we introduce living plants, daylight, natural materials, water or organic forms into work environments, we are not only creating well-being. We are building environments that better match the conditions for which our brains evolved.

Biophilia is therefore not about decoration. It is about relationship. The stronger our experience of belonging to nature becomes, the easier it becomes to understand that humans are not outside ecosystems but are part of them. This affects not only our well-being but also our values, our decisions and our willingness to develop solutions that strengthen rather than weaken the systems we ourselves depend on.

The digital environment also shapes our consciousness

If the physical environment influences our thinking, the digital environment does so to at least as great an extent. The difference is that its influence is often more difficult to detect. Every notice, every news item, every message and every opened tab competes for the brain’s attention. The result is a workflow where focus is constantly broken before thoughts have had time to develop fully.

The author Cal Newport has described this through the concept of digital minimalism. The basic idea is not that technology is the problem, but that our relationship with technology needs to become more conscious. Technology should support what is important, not control our attention through constant availability.

From an innovation perspective, this is crucial. Creative breakthroughs often require long, continuous periods of concentration where the brain has the opportunity to delve deeper. If every thought is interrupted by digital signals, we risk getting stuck in a state of constant reaction where we become skilled at handling information but increasingly poor at creating new knowledge.

Creative zones are different types of landscapes

A common misconception is that there is an optimal creative work environment. In reality, creativity works much more like nature itself. An ecosystem contains many different habitats because different species need different conditions. Similarly, creative work needs different types of environments depending on where we are in the process.

When new ideas are to be born, open environments are often needed that encourage curiosity and unexpected encounters. When ideas are to be developed, quiet places are needed where thoughts can be deepened without interruption. When solutions are to be tested, environments are required where people can easily collaborate, experiment and provide feedback. And when complex relationships are to be understood, we sometimes need to leave both the office and the screen to give the brain the opportunity to process information while moving, in nature or in other environments that break the pattern of everyday life.

The truly creative workplace is therefore not a single room. It is a landscape of different zones that together support different ways of thinking.

Biomimicry teaches us to design with nature

Biomimicry is about studying nature’s solutions to develop human innovations. Scientists and designers have been inspired by everything from the natural ventilation of termite mounds to the water-repellent surfaces of lotus leaves and the flight technology of birds. But biomimicry is really about something deeper than copying nature’s forms.

It is about understanding the principles that have made nature’s systems sustainable for billions of years.

Nature does not build linear systems where resources are used and then discarded. It builds circular flows where waste products become resources for something else. It builds diversity instead of uniformity, collaboration instead of isolation and constant adaptation instead of static perfection.

When we start designing our workplaces, organizations and digital systems based on the same principles, our way of thinking also changes. We start looking for relationships instead of just efficiency. We see the value of feedback, variation and collaboration because the environment around us reminds us that this is how living systems work.

Finding our way back to nature is also finding our way back to ourselves

There is another dimension that is rarely discussed when we talk about the work environment and innovation. Our relationship with nature not only affects how we feel. It also affects how we see our own role in the world.

When people feel that they are outside of nature, environmental issues easily become something about limiting human impact. But when we re-experience ourselves as part of nature’s systems, the perspective changes. Then the question also arises of how we can contribute positively to the systems on which we ourselves depend.

This idea is close to developments in regenerative design and systems innovation. The goal is no longer simply to reduce the damage we cause. The ambition is instead to create solutions that improve ecosystems, strengthen biodiversity, build up soils, purify water and create better living environments for both humans and other species.

Perhaps the most important innovation will then not be a new product but a new way of looking at the relationship between humans and nature.

Environments shape cultures and cultures shape the future

When we design an office, a school, a digital workflow or a public space, we are simultaneously shaping the behaviors that will occur there. Environments affect how people meet, how long they can concentrate, how often they are interrupted, how creative they dare to be and how easily they see connections between different perspectives. Over time, these behaviors become culture, and culture in turn shapes the innovations that become possible.

This means that the most strategic design question may not be about what a building looks like or how a digital platform works. It may be about what way of thinking the specific environment encourages. If it rewards constant activity, it risks creating fragmented attention. If it offers recovery, variety, contact with nature and space for immersion, people are more likely to develop ideas that transcend habitual patterns of thinking.

Perhaps this is why the most innovative environments of the future will not be the most technologically advanced. They will likely be those that best succeed in uniting nature’s billions of years of learning with human creativity and technological possibilities. Because when we rediscover that we do not think apart from nature but together with it, our view of innovation also changes.

It no longer becomes a way to conquer the world, but a way to interact with the living systems that make all human thinking possible in the first place.
