Imagine an old cabinetmaker who has worked with wood his whole life. Over decades, he has learned how different types of wood behave, how to stop a crack before it gets bigger, how an old table can be given another hundred years of life and how to sharpen a tool to feel right in the hand. Most of this knowledge is not in any books. It is in the hands. It has been shaped by thousands of hours of failures, discoveries and small adjustments. When that person retires or passes away, there is often a feeling that something irreplaceable is being lost. We talk about the fact that craftsmanship is in danger of dying out because fewer people choose to repair, fewer learn the craft and more choose to buy new instead. The prognosis seems obvious. If no one learns the knowledge anymore, it will sooner or later disappear.
But history has a strange ability to surprise us.
What looks like a straight line often turns out to be the beginning of a completely different development. And that is precisely why the future is so difficult to predict. We almost always underestimate the changes that occur when several technologies, behaviors and societal changes begin to interact. We see what is in front of us, but we have a much harder time imagining the new connections that do not yet exist.

There were thousands. Knowledge that had previously been geographically limited became global. People could learn directly from the world’s most skilled craftsmen without ever meeting them. No one really saw this coming because the internet was initially seen as a way to disseminate information. Few realized that it would also become a way to preserve humanity’s practical experiences.
Social media became the world’s largest workshop
When social media first emerged, many thought it would be used primarily for vacation photos and everyday updates. No one could quite foresee that the platforms would develop into enormous libraries of knowledge where people would voluntarily share their best ideas. Today, anyone can find detailed videos on how to renovate a wooden floor, fix a coffee machine, re-sew old clothes, build furniture from recycled materials or repair electronics that were previously considered expendable.
The interesting thing is that this is not just about instructions. It is also about creativity. When people show their solutions, they inspire others to find their own. A repair leads to an improvement. That improvement inspires someone else to develop an even smarter solution. Knowledge does not become static. It is continuously developed because people build on each other’s ideas. Social media thus became not just a channel for entertainment. It developed into perhaps the world’s largest open workshop where millions of people together continue to develop the craft.
No one saw the global craft brain
Even more surprising was the development when artificial intelligence began to be used to compile and understand the enormous amounts of knowledge that people have shared over several decades. Few could have imagined that one day a person would be able to ask a simple question about how to fix an old wooden window, repair a sewing machine or choose the right glue for a porcelain bowl and get a coherent answer based on the experiences of people all over the world.
In a sense, a global craft brain is emerging. It does not consist of a single person. It consists of the collective experiences of millions of people. AI has not invented these crafts itself. It has learned from generations of people who have documented their knowledge. Therefore, AI will not become a replacement for the craftsman. Rather, it will become a guide to the collective experiences of humanity. This means that knowledge that previously risked dying with the last master can now live on in completely new ways. It also becomes accessible to people who would otherwise never have found it.
But technology does not solve the question of reason
At the same time, a new challenge arises. The fact that knowledge is available does not mean that we automatically use it wisely. Just like the internet, AI can spread both good and bad ideas. It can help people repair instead of throw away. It can also be used to create disposable products faster than before. It can help us reduce resource use or contribute to increased consumption. Technology does not determine the direction. People do.
The big question has therefore changed. Previously, we worried that knowledge would disappear. Today, the challenge is more about which parts of the knowledge we choose to use. It is a much more difficult question. The larger the knowledge bank we build, the more important our ability to choose what is wise, sustainable and long-term. The most important skill of the future may therefore not be finding information, but deciding which information is worth translating into action.
Creativity is the ability to make the right choice
From an innovation perspective, this is very interesting. We have long associated innovation with creating something new. But perhaps the most important innovations of the future will just as often be about rediscovering things we have almost forgotten. Old repair methods can be combined with modern materials. Traditional construction techniques can be combined with digital design. Local craft traditions can inspire sustainable industrial solutions.
Creativity is not about choosing between old and new. It is about combining them in new ways. It is exactly the same mechanism that underlies much of today’s innovation. The new often arises when two previously separate worlds of knowledge suddenly meet. AI makes this combination easier because it can help us discover connections between areas of knowledge that were previously separated by language, geography or generations.
A system changes when relationships change
From a systems innovation perspective, the development becomes even clearer. It was not the internet alone that changed craftsmanship. It was not social media. It was not AI. It was the interaction between them. The internet made knowledge global. Social media made knowledge visible. AI made knowledge accessible. It also shows why the future is so difficult to predict. We often look at one technology at a time. But real system changes almost always occur when multiple technologies, behaviors and societal changes happen to meet at the same time. That is why system innovation almost always surprises us.
Sustainability becomes more fun when knowledge becomes easier
There is also another important consequence. For a long time, sustainability has often been described as something that requires sacrifice. We should give up, reduce and consume less. Although much of this is important, the story risks feeling heavy. When the knowledge about how to fix, rebuild and reuse becomes easier to find, the experience also changes.
Suddenly, sustainability becomes creative. It becomes fun to repair. It becomes inspiring to reuse. It becomes possible to create solutions yourself instead of just buying new ones. When people also share their solutions with each other, development is further strengthened. The global craft brain becomes not just an encyclopedia. The future almost always surprises
Perhaps that is the important lesson of all. We are often quick to predict what will disappear. Much harder is to imagine the unexpected combinations that will arise along the way. No one could fully foresee that the internet would make the world as interconnected as it is today. Few could have imagined that social media would develop into the world’s largest library of practical knowledge. Even fewer could have imagined that artificial intelligence would make humanity’s collective craft traditions accessible with a simple question.
This does not mean that the future will solve all our problems. Quite the opposite.
Every new technology also creates new risks and new dilemmas. But perhaps we should be careful not to think that we already know what the future will look like.
