AI as a creative partner

Imagine you are leading a creative workshop. Around the table are a designer, an engineer, an economist, a behavioral scientist, a marketer, and a lawyer. The conversation comes alive almost immediately. The designer sees the user experience, the engineer sees the technical possibilities, the economist thinks about the business model, the lawyer discovers the risks, the behavioral scientist tries to understand how people will actually act, and the marketer thinks about how the idea will reach the world.

Suddenly the door opens and another participant enters. The person says almost nothing on their own, but every time someone asks a question, they can answer from almost any perspective. They can reason like a programmer, formulate like a copywriter, summarize research, propose business models, analyze statistics, create images, write code, and compare historical examples in a matter of seconds. This is roughly how AI begins to function in today’s creative work.

Perhaps the biggest misconception is that we still describe AI as a tool. It’s natural to do so because we’re comparing to previous technology, but that comparison doesn’t really capture what actually happens when people start working together with generative AI.

The hammer doesn’t think back

When we talk about AI, we often use the same language we use about other digital tools. We say that AI is a tool, much like a word processor, spreadsheet, or drawing program. The problem is that the analogy is lame.

A hammer doesn’t change the way you think. A drawing program doesn’t come up with alternative solutions unless you create them yourself. A calculator doesn’t question your assumptions, and a spreadsheet doesn’t suggest new business models when you’re working on your budget.

Generative AI works differently. It responds back. It suggests. It develops. It combines. It sometimes challenges our habitual ways of thinking by presenting perspectives we would never have thought to explore ourselves. That doesn’t mean that AI is a human, but it does mean that the relationship between a human and AI is different from the relationship between a human and a regular tool. It is much more like a creative collaboration.

The Medici effect and the power of different perspectives

In the book The Medici Effect, Swedish entrepreneur and author Frans Johansson describes how the most groundbreaking ideas often arise when people from completely different disciplines meet. The inspiration comes from Renaissance Florence, where the Medici family brought together artists, scientists, architects, philosophers and engineers. When people with different ways of thinking began to work together, ideas emerged that none of them could have created on their own.

It is a pattern that still applies. A designer sees different possibilities than an economist. A doctor asks different questions than a programmer. A biologist uses different models than an architect. That is precisely why their joint creativity becomes greater than the sum of their individual skills.

AI adds something completely new to this picture. It does not represent a single discipline. It can switch between many perspectives almost instantly. It can reason about technology, psychology, marketing, history, law, design, behavioral science and communication in the same conversation. This doesn’t make AI an expert in everything, but it does make it an unusually versatile creative partner. In a sense, AI becomes a team member who can borrow glasses from almost any field of knowledge without leaving the meeting room.

Creativity is about combining

A common definition of creativity is creating new and valuable combinations of things that already exist. If that’s true, AI becomes particularly interesting. AI can combine ideas from thousands of different fields in a matter of seconds. It can suggest how a biological phenomenon could inspire a business model, how a computer game can be used as a metaphor for an education system, or how principles from music can be applied to organizational development.

It can help an engineer think like a designer or an economist reason like a psychologist. AI is very good at these types of combinations because it can move between large fields of knowledge much faster than a human. But the combinations only become valuable if someone knows why they are interesting. That’s where humans come in. Creativity is not just about creating lots of combinations. It is also about determining which combinations actually make sense.

The most important thing is not what AI can do

The discussion about AI is often about everything it can do. Perhaps the most important question is what it cannot do.

AI does not feel joy. It does not feel sadness. It does not fall in love. It does not worry about its children. It does not experience shame, pride or longing. It has no dreams of its own and no experiences of living a human life. This means that AI can reason about emotions but not experience them. It can describe needs but not feel them. It can analyze values ​​but not carrying them themselves.

This is where the role of humans becomes clear. AI can help us explore the space of possibilities, but it cannot determine what really matters to humans. That difference will likely become even more important as AI gets better at everything else.

Humans are irrational and that is a strength

There is another difference that is often forgotten. Humans are irrational and that is actually one of our greatest strengths.

Ask someone what they prefer between the World Cup and Taylor Swift. Most people will answer almost immediately. Then ask them what they prefer between a sea view and homemade pasta. Even then, you will get a direct answer, even though the options cannot really be compared objectively.

We humans value the world through emotions, experiences, identity and context. We do not always need logical arguments to know which we prefer. AI works differently. When asked the same questions, it often tries to analyze both options, describe their strengths and reason about different situations in which one or the other might be better. It’s logical. But it’s not very human.

The interesting thing is that our values ​​can also change in an instant. An artist can be loved one day and lose the audience’s trust the next day after a scandal. A sports hero can suddenly take on a completely different symbolic meaning. A dish can feel less attractive because it has been linked to a new story. Our values ​​live together with society. AI can analyze these changes, but it doesn’t experience them. That’s why humans still don’t have to be the ones to decide what’s actually important.

That’s why human judgment is becoming increasingly important

That’s also why research today is less and less about whether AI can be creative. That question is gradually becoming less interesting. The really interesting question is instead how AI and humans together become more creative than either one alone.

AI can generate hundreds of ideas. Humans choose which ones actually matter. AI can create ten different prototypes in a few minutes. Humans decide which one solves the right problem. AI can analyze enormous amounts of information. Humans decide which direction is worth following. The better AI gets, the more important human judgment becomes. Creativity is shifting from being about who produces the most ideas to being about who can formulate the most meaningful questions and make the wisest choices.

Creativity is about formulating the right problem

One of AI’s greatest strengths is speed. It can develop ideas, test alternatives and create prototypes much faster than humans. But AI always works based on the task it is given. If the problem is formulated incorrectly, the solution will also be wrong.

Therefore, the most important task for humans is increasingly to formulate the problem. What need are we really trying to solve? Who are the people affected? Which system do we want to change? What exactly is success? The person who formulates the question often controls the entire creative process. Therefore, the creativity of the future is less about finding answers and more about formulating questions that lead both humans and AI towards the right space of opportunity.

AI and sustainability

This becomes particularly clear when we look at sustainability issues. Of course, AI can be used to create more films, more advertisements, more digital experiences and more ways to consume. AI can also be used to optimise energy systems, develop new medicines, detect diseases earlier, reduce food waste, improve public transport and analyse climate data.

The technology is the same. The difference lies in the problem we choose to solve. Therefore, the discussion about AI can never be reduced to how many parameters a model has or how quickly it generates text. The important question is what we use it for.

There is a big difference between building energy-intensive server halls to generate unlimited amounts of entertainment and using the same technology to reduce emissions, develop healthcare, improve education or help solve the climate crisis. Technology is fundamentally neutral. Our goals are not.

The best creative partner

Perhaps this is why AI should not replace people. It should complement them. Just as a good innovation team consists of people with different perspectives, the creative work of the future needs to combine human strengths with artificial ones.

AI contributes speed, variety, combinations and a nearly unlimited library of perspectives. Humans contribute direction, values, intuition, judgment, experience and understanding of what actually creates meaning for other people. AI opens up the space of possibilities. Humans decide which possibilities are worth realizing.

The creativity of the future is a collaboration

Perhaps the biggest change we face is not that AI becomes creative. Perhaps the biggest change is that humans gain a new type of creative colleague. A colleague who never gets tired, who can contribute perspectives from almost every field of knowledge and who can help us explore ideas at a speed that was previously impossible.

But just like in all good teams, success is not about who is the smartest. It is about how different strengths complement each other. And perhaps that is precisely where the innovation of the future will be created. Not in the competition between humans and artificial intelligence, but in the interplay between human intuition, values ​​and judgment and AI’s ability to explore an almost infinite space of possibilities.

Because when we stop asking whether AI can replace human creativity and instead start asking how AI can enhance it, we shift the focus from technology to what really matters. To solve the problems that are really worth solving together.
